Where to eat in central Trento: restaurants we recommend

When our guests ask us where to eat in Trento, we answer with these five addresses: four are in the historic centre, a few minutes' walk from our homes, and one is on the shore of Lake Caldonazzo. They are Golden Suites partner restaurants, with a discount on the bill reserved for our guests.

Ristorante Al Duomo

At via Verdi 77, the same street as some of our homes, with a terrace overlooking the Cathedral. The cooking combines Trentino tradition with seasonal ingredients and contemporary ideas, from starters to desserts, and pizza is on the menu too. It is open every day for lunch and dinner.

Ai Vicoli, restaurant and wine bar

In a fourteenth-century palazzo, at piazza Santa Teresa Verzeri 1, reached through three lanes of the centre, which gives it its name. It is a restaurant, wine bar and wine shop in one: meat and fish dishes prepared to order, special care for coeliacs, vegetarians and people with intolerances, home-made desserts and, in season, white truffle. At the wine bar there are 25 wines by the glass that change every day; below, a cellar cut into the rock, which can be visited, with local labels and big names as far as Champagne, available to take away too.

Assaje, Neapolitan pizza

At Largo Carducci 27, in the historic centre, a gourmet pizzeria devoted to real Neapolitan pizza, with carefully made dough and fresh, seasonal ingredients. Handy late in the evening too.

Pizzeria Alla Grotta

At vicolo San Marco 6, in the historic centre, with a dining room in the style of a Tyrolean stube. It is the right address for trying Trentino cooking: the menu includes strangolapreti alla trentina, carne salada and Teroldego risotto, alongside grilled meat and a long list of pizzas.

Ristorante Al Faro, on Lake Caldonazzo

About half an hour from Trento, on the shore of Lake Caldonazzo, Ristorante Al Faro has two floors with views, a terrace, a garden and a private beach with access to the lake. The cooking is Mediterranean with dishes from the Trentino tradition, fish and Neapolitan pizza. In summer what you spend on a parasol or cabana becomes credit to use at the restaurant.

How to get the discount

Just tell the restaurant that you are staying in a Golden Suites home and show your booking confirmation, no voucher needed. The discount is offered and applied directly by the restaurant, which remains solely responsible for the service and the bill. What to order in Trento

Among the first courses, canederli (bread dumplings, in broth or with melted butter) and strangolapreti, bread-and-spinach gnocchi with butter and sage; among the mains, carne salada, often with beans, and polenta with mushrooms or alpine dairy cheeses. To drink, a glass of Trentodoc as an aperitivo and a Teroldego red with dinner. We describe them one by one in traditional Trentino dishes.

Practical tips

• Book at weekends and in Advent, when the centre is full for the Christmas market.
• Kitchen hours are mountain hours: for dinner it is best to be seated by 9pm.
• If you are travelling with children or have intolerances, say so when you book.
