At a glance

Within a few blocks Trento brings together a great Renaissance castle, a science museum designed by Renzo Piano, an underground Roman city and a medieval tower with a view over the whole square. Here are the museums to choose from, with checked times and prices and ways to save money.

Buonconsiglio Castle

It is the largest monumental complex in the region: a fortress since the thirteenth century, then the residence of the prince-bishops until the Napoleonic era, now a museum. You visit the medieval Castelvecchio, the Renaissance Magno Palazzo of Bernardo Cles, the Baroque Giunta Albertiana and the gardens; the Torre Aquila (Eagle Tower) houses the Cycle of the Months, one of the masterpieces of International Gothic.

MUSE, the science museum

In the Le Albere district, the MUSE tells the story of the mountain from summit to valley floor: glaciers, biodiversity, dinosaurs, climate and technology, with many interactive stations. It is the ideal museum to visit with children.

Underground Trento: S.A.S.S. and Villa di Orfeo

Beneath Piazza Cesare Battisti you can visit 1,700 square metres of the Roman city of Tridentum: walls, a paved street, houses with mosaics and a glassmaker's workshop. The same ticket is valid for the Villa romana di Orfeo, on via Rosmini, with its great mosaic. Full details in the guide to underground Trento.

Museo Diocesano Tridentino and the Torre Civica

In the Palazzo Pretorio, on Piazza Duomo, the Diocesan Museum holds the treasures of the Cathedral and objects bearing witness to the Council of Trent. From the museum you climb the Torre Civica, 45 metres high, reopened after the restoration that followed the 2015 fire: on a one-hour guided visit only, ten people at most, 156 steps.

The Gallerie di Piedicastello

Two former tunnels of the bypass, closed to traffic in 2007, have become an exhibition space of over 6,000 square metres run by the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino. They host exhibitions on the history of the region and of the twentieth century.
