Trento with children: what to do and see as a family

At a glance
- Ideal for: families with children aged 0 to 14
- Not to be missed: MUSE, cable car to Sardagna, Monte Bondone
- Savings: at the MUSE and underground Trento, children under 14 go free
- With a pushchair: the historic centre is flat and almost entirely pedestrianised
Trento is an easy city for families: the centre is small and pedestrianised, you can get around with a pushchair, and in a few hours you can go from a museum designed for children to a mountain meadow. Here is what to do with little ones, with the advice we give our guests.
The MUSE, the science museum
It is the first stop for almost every family. The MUSE explains the nature of the mountains, glaciers, animals and evolution with hands-on exhibits and workshops. For children aged 0 to 5 there is the Maxi Ooh!, a dedicated space in which to discover the forest together with an adult.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday (every day in August). Under-14s and one accompanying adult go in free, but this rate has to be booked by phone, not online; everyone else buys a ticket online, choosing a time slot, with a maximum stay of three hours. Outside the museum, the biodiversity gardens and the biotope are free to enter.
The cable car to Sardagna
A few minutes in a cabin above the Adige are enough to make a child happy. The cable car leaves from the city, near the railway station, and reaches the Sardagna viewpoint, about 400 metres higher up. All the information is in the guide to the Trento–Sardagna cable car.
The Roman city beneath your feet
Walking on a Roman road two thousand years old, beneath a modern square, impresses even the youngest. At the Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas children up to 14 go free, and in summer there are visits and workshops for families. Virtual reality headsets are not recommended for under-8s.
The castle of the prince-bishops
Towers, battlements, gardens and frescoes full of scenes of everyday life: Buonconsiglio Castle is a proper castle, and the Cycle of the Months in the Torre Aquila (Eagle Tower) reads like a medieval comic strip. The castle runs scheduled activities for families, and the family ticket costs €20.
Parks and green spaces in the city
- Parco di Gocciadoro: the city's woodland, with paths, centuries-old trees and places to play.
- The MUSE gardens and Le Albere park: lawns and open spaces next to the museum, handy after your visit.
- The Doss Trento: a short climb through greenery to the Cesare Battisti Mausoleum, with the view over the city.
In the mountains half an hour away: Monte Bondone
Monte Bondone has gentle slopes and short routes suitable for children. At the Viote, next to the Alpine Botanical Garden, there are the Alpine Playground and the Geological Garden, built with natural materials; in winter there is the ski area with beginners' pistes and places to play in the snow. The Botanical Garden is closed for building work and reopens in June 2027.
In summer, at the lake
Lake Caldonazzo and Lake Levico have warm water, beaches and pedalo and canoe rental, about half an hour from the centre. On Lake Caldonazzo our guests have the partner restaurant Al Faro, with its private beach. You will find all the ideas in the guide to the lakes near Trento.
Practical tips for families
- On Mondays the MUSE, the castle and the archaeological area are closed: it is the right day for the park, the cable car or the mountains.
- The Torre Civica is not suitable for younger children: the climb is not allowed for those under 1.20 metres tall.
- Buses: in the city, children up to the age of 6 travel free with an adult who holds a ticket.
- Staying in an apartment: with a kitchen and more than one room, schedules and meals fit around the children. Our homes in the centre are a few minutes' walk from everything.
