Trento–Sardagna cable car: tickets, times and what to see

At a glance
- Departure: in the city, near the railway station, on the bank of the Adige
- Arrival: Sardagna, about 400 metres above the city
- Tourist ticket: €3 single, €5 return, bike €2
- Pass: the Museum Pass and Guest Card are valid
- Good to know: in strong wind the service stops and a replacement bus runs
The Trento–Sardagna cable car is the fastest and most scenic way to see Trento from above: in a few minutes the cabin climbs from the bank of the Adige to Sardagna, the village on the slopes of Monte Bondone, about 400 metres above the city. It is a public transport service, used every day by the people who live up there, which is why it is cheap.
A piece of the city's history
The cable car was designed in 1922 by the engineer Othmar Haas and opened to the public on 4 August 1925: in 2025 it marked its hundredth anniversary. In 1960 it was rebuilt and the lower station was moved. Today it carries around two hundred thousand passengers a year.
Where to catch it
The departure station is in the city, on the Adige side, a few minutes' walk from the railway station and the bus station, and about a quarter of an hour from Piazza Duomo. The arrival station is in the village of Sardagna.
Tickets for non-residents of Trentino
- Single: €3.
- Return: €5.
- Bicycle: €2 each way.
- Tourist tickets are bought only at the cable car stations. The ordinary urban bus ticket is valid only for people who live in the province.
- The Museum Pass (48 hours) and the Guest Card are valid.
Opening times
Departures are frequent throughout the day, with a reduced timetable on Sundays and public holidays. Up-to-date times are on the “Funivia” page of Trentino Trasporti, which also reports closures for maintenance. In strong wind the service stops and a replacement bus runs instead: if the sky is clear but the wind is blowing, check before you go.
What to see from Sardagna
From the viewpoint near the arrival station you can see the whole of Trento: the course of the Adige, the historic centre with its bell towers, Buonconsiglio Castle, the Doss Trento and, in the background, the Vigolana and Marzola mountains. At sunset the light on the city is especially beautiful. Trails to Monte Bondone also start from Sardagna.
Continuing to Monte Bondone
From Sardagna the road continues to Candriai, Vaneze, Vason and the Viote on Monte Bondone. By public transport there is the extra-urban bus line Sardagna–Candriai–Vason–Viote: note that on this line the Trento urban ticket is not valid: you need the extra-urban ticket.
Tips
- Combine the cable car with a walk on the Doss Trento, which is on the same bank of the river: you will find it in the guide to walks and hikes from Trento.
- With children the cable car is always a hit: more ideas in Trento with children.
- If you have a bike, you can load it into the cabin (€2 each way) and ride back down to the valley.
