Monte Bondone is Trento's mountain: it rises just west of the city, is recognisable by the profile of its three peaks and can be reached in under half an hour. In summer it is all meadows, woods and trails; in winter it becomes the ski area closest to the city, with one of the most beautiful cross-country ski centres in the area.
How to get there
By car you drive up from Trento along the Monte Bondone provincial road, which passes through Sardagna, Candriai, Vaneze and Vason; alternatively you can go up from Sopramonte. The villages are spread along the road and have car parks; in winter you need snow equipment.
By public transport there are buses linking Trento with Monte Bondone, more frequent in high season, and in winter a ski bus connecting the accommodation with the ski area and the cross-country centre. Remember that on the extra-urban line Sardagna–Candriai–Vason–Viote the Trento urban ticket is not valid. You can also take the cable car up to Sardagna and continue from there.
The villages
Along the road you come to Candriai, Norge and Vaneze, set in the woods, and higher up Vason, the hub of the ski area and the starting point of many summer routes. Beyond it opens the Viote basin, a plateau of meadows at about 1,500 metres, with a biotope, the cross-country centre and the MUSE facilities. Above it all are the Tre Cime, protected by a strict nature reserve, which rise above 2,000 metres.
In summer
- Walks at the Viote: well-marked trails with moderate ascents, suitable for families too, and longer climbs towards the summits.
- Mountain biking: forest tracks and routes for all levels.
- Terrazza delle Stelle: the MUSE's astronomical observatory at the Viote, in an area far from city lights. It opens during scheduled activities and by reservation; in summer it hosts stargazing evenings and concerts.
- Alpine Playground and Geological Garden: two spaces at the Viote built with natural materials, designed for children.
- Malghe (alpine dairy huts) and restaurants where you can stop for lunch with mountain cooking.
The Alpine Botanical Garden at the Viote, one of the largest and oldest in the Alps, with over a thousand plant species, is closed for building work: according to the MUSE it will reopen in June 2027.
In winter
- Downhill skiing: the Monte Bondone ski area has about 70 hectares of skiable terrain and 20 km of wide pistes, with snowmaking and a snow park. It is half an hour from the centre of Trento.
- Cross-country skiing: the Viote cross-country centre has over 30 km of trails for classic and skating techniques, with loops of different lengths, equipment rental and areas for beginners.
- Snowshoeing and walks in the snow, and areas for children to play in the snow.
An idea for a day
Set off from Trento in the morning, stop at Vason for a coffee, walk through the Viote meadows to a malga (alpine dairy hut) for lunch and head back in the afternoon. If it is a summer evening with scheduled activities, stop at the Terrazza delle Stelle before coming down to the city.
