Trento is a city made for bikes: it is flat, has urban cycle lanes and sits right on the Adige Valley cycle route, which runs along the river away from traffic. In Trentino the cycle paths total more than 400 kilometres: from here you can ride towards Bolzano, towards Rovereto and Lake Garda or, with a short train ride, into the Valsugana.
The Adige Valley cycle route
It is the backbone of the Trentino network: 81 kilometres in the province of Trento, almost all flat along the river embankments, with vineyards and mountains on either side. It passes west of the historic centre and can be reached from the city in a few minutes.
- Heading north you ride among the vineyards of the Piana Rotaliana, the land of Teroldego, and continue towards Salorno and Bolzano.
- Heading south you reach Rovereto, the city of the Mart, and the Vallagarina.
Along the route there are the Bicigrills, refreshment stops designed for cyclists.
From Trento to Lake Garda
From the Adige cycle path, near Mori, the Adige–Garda cycle path begins: about 20 kilometres, with an uphill stretch to the San Giovanni pass and the descent to Torbole, on Lake Garda. From Trento to Torbole it is about fifty kilometres: a demanding day but within reach of those who cycle regularly, even by e-bike.
The Valsugana and the lakes
The Valsugana cycle route starts at Lake Caldonazzo and follows the River Brenta towards the Veneto for about 70 kilometres, mostly flat. From Trento it is best to take the Valsugana train with your bike (€2 each way), get off near Lake Caldonazzo or Lake Levico and start pedalling from there. A day like this combines cycling and a swim in the lake: ideas in the guide to the lakes near Trento.
The Monte Bondone climb
For road cyclists Monte Bondone is a historic climb: the road that rises from Trento to Vason and the Viote entered Giro d'Italia history in 1956, with Charly Gaul's feat in the snow. You can also take the cable car up to Sardagna with your bike (€2 each way) and start from there.
